Acne Treatments
Facial and cosmetic treatments
Acne treatments are far from perfected although there are several
options that offer differing degrees of success dependant on the type of
acne a patient is suffering from, the severity and position of the acne,
as well as other factors such as age and other ongoing illnesses.
Facial Acne Treatments
Benzoyl peroxide; is a product that can be very helpful but as
an acne treatment can be very irritable to some people. However, it is
effective through its ability to attack the bacteria that cause acne in
depth, and it will also help to reduce the thickness of the skin.
However, if this product is too irritating it is advisable to stop its
use.
Salicylic acid; This product is less irritating that benzoyl
peroxide, but it does not attack the bacteria, although it is very
effective in reducing the thickness of the skin. At a concentration of
2% it becomes much less irritating than benzoyl peroxide. It also
recommended to use fruit acids to replace lost salycique acid, as its
effects are similar.
Soaps: It is better to use specialized soaps to clean the skin
and moisturize with moisturizing creams containing little or no
mineral oils. These oils are irritating to skin so it is advisable
to clean the skin regularly to remove dead skin, which impedes the flow
of oil and clogs the pores of the skin. In addition, the contraceptive
pill for women helps regulate the hormonal secretions and helps to
reduce sebum production.
Chemical peels; If the effects of acne are more long lasting
or severe then there are options such as chemical peels which have
become popular acne treatments over recent years. Peels can help in the
reduction of acne related scaring by using a combination of several
different types of mild acid to burn off the top layers of the skin and
with them the less deeply penetrating scars cause by acne.
Dermabrasion is losing ground as an effective acne treatment
to laser therapy but is still regarded as useful in attacking deeper
scars that chemical peels can not reach.
Microdermabrasion utilizes minute crystals which are blown at very
high speed into the skin, not too different to sandblasting a building
in principal.
Acne Treatment - Laser methods
Although successful in many cases some controversy surround the use
of laser implements for acne treatment in which tiny blasts of highly
directed and intense light burn away the skins surface and also acne.
Electrocautery is the other option for acne victims; this
system uses a current of electricity which becomes very hot and like the
laser burns tiny portions of the skins surface at a time to improve
appearance.
At the exact opposite end of the scale is the use of extreme cold in
the form of CO2 or liquid nitrogen. Known as Cryotherapy (cold
therapy) this also burns away the skin but by using extreme cold instead
of extreme heat. |
